Studio

Studio Spaces

Every student is allocated an individual studio space with a desk, a chair, and a locker. New BEDS students are assigned spaces (mostly on the mezzanines) after the studio groups are organized in September. Different spaces will be assigned to everyone at the beginning of the winter and summer terms, when the studio groups are reorganized.

Guidelines

For everyone's well-being and safety, please observe the following studio guidelines. They have been worked out jointly by faculty, students, and the fire marshall:

  • One desk, one chair, and one locker per person.
  • No permanent partitions or locked enclosures.
  • No flammable partitions, curtains, awnings, etc.
  • No smoking anywhere in the building or anywhere on Dal property
  • No soldering irons, torches, or heating elements in the studio.
  • The fire lanes in the studio must be kept completely clear at all times.
  • Don't obstruct the sprinkler heads and don't prop open the fire doors.
  • Aerosol sprays must be used only in the spray room in the IDEA Building, not inside or outside the building, and not on the emergency stairs.
  • Plaster, cement, and concrete must be mixed only in the Wet Lab on the ground floor.
  • Power tools must be used only in the Wood Shop in the IDEA Building.
  • If you make a mess, clean it up, eh?
  • If you listen to music, use earphones to avoid disturbing others.
  • If you want to talk on your phone, have a loud conversation, or participate in an online meeting, please leave the studio to avoid disturbing others.
  • Keep any food items in a sealed container to discourage furry predators.
  • Alcohol is not permitted in the building, except at special events with a liquor permit.
  • Bicycles must be left outside the building.
  • Make sure that your name appears on your books, your sketchbooks, and every drawing or model that leaves your desk.
  • The four seminar rooms are used regularly as classrooms, so projects and materials must not be left there.
  • Beware of thieves visiting the building; keep your locker locked and don't leave valuables unattended.

End-of-term Cleanup

DASA is responsible for organizing students for the cleanup at the end of each term. Here are the guidelines.

Prepare

  • A week in advance, ask Susanna to request wheeled bins and clear bags.
  • Notify students of the cleanup day.

Clean

  • Remove everything from walls and partitions (drawings, tape, tacks, nails, screws, decorations, etc.) but leave bulletin boards and sturdy coat hooks.
  • Remove everything from under desks and inside lockers. Wipe desks and locker shelves.
  • Clear the fire lanes.
  • Clear everything off the floor, so Facilities Management can clean it.
  • Add a sign to any furniture that needs repair.
  • End of B1, B2, and B5: Place your belongings on your desk, ready to move to your new studio space at the start of the next term.
  • End of B3, M2, and M6: Take all your belongings home.
  • End of M1 for students who will be in Halifax for M2: Move everything off the floor. You can leave items on your desk and in your M1 locker.
  • End of M5: Leave everything where it is, assuming you'll have the same space in M6.

Reuse

  • drawing and model materials > beside the material depot in the East Studio
  • construction materials (lumber, plywood, plastic, sand, bricks)听

Recycle

  • paper > into wheeled bins or clear bags
  • corrugated cardboard > beside the wheeled bins
  • organic waste > into organic containers
  • small garbage > into clear bags
  • large garbage > gathered and identified with a sign
  • hazardous waste (batteries, paints, solvents, aerosols) > into a cardboard box with a sign
  • metal > into a cardboard box with a sign
  • sharps (knife blades) > into a yellow sharps container
  • construction materials (lumber, clean wood, treated wood, etc.) > see the Leftover Materials section on the Wood Shop page (Regan can provide access to the garbage corral in the parking lot)
